Gompers Middle School was chosen as part of the Department of Education’s Listening and Learning Tour. United States Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and his senior staff have conducted similar tours across the country to bring together students, parents, educators, community leaders and elected officials to share their ideas for reform and how the federal government can help improve public education.

Gompers was selected because of its remarkable turnaround story since the Partnership of Los Angeles Schools took control. There has been a 24% increase in the number of sixth grade students scoring proficient and above in English, and a 17% increase in the number of eight grade students scoring proficient and above in algebra. School absences have also decreased by 50%.

After the tour, the Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa led a discussion among key educational leaders in Los Angeles including representatives from parent groups, community organizations, charter operators, turnaround groups, universities, faith based organizations and the business community. The roundtable conversation was a means to provide Secretary Duncan with an overview of the partners from various industries that are driving education reform in Los Angeles, as well as to give local educational leaders an opportunity to share their ideas, best practices and recommendations for large scale education reform.
